There’s something special about fall

At Eventus, we love October.

The weather gets cooler, the leaves start changing, football is everywhere, and suddenly pumpkin spice is added to just about everything. We’re okay with all of it.

But as a team who spends a lot of time thinking about schools, staffing, enrollment, licensing, budgets, growth, and approximately 700 other things that find their way onto our calendars, October also gives us a chance to remember something important: This is supposed to be fun.

That's especially true in early childhood education. A pile of leaves isn't just a pile of leaves to a preschooler. It's an adventure. A pumpkin isn't just a pumpkin. It's something to touch, investigate, roll, count, and probably attempt to lift. A puddle isn't a problem. It's an opportunity.

That's what we love about working in early childhood. Children remind us that learning doesn't always have to look like learning.

A walk outside can become a science lesson. Leaves become a math activity. A pumpkin becomes an experiment. And a cardboard box can become a spaceship. Sometimes, we just need to get out of the way and let children explore.

Adults need this reminder, too.

Running schools is hard. Leading people is hard. There are days when the staffing schedule doesn't cooperate, enrollment isn't where we want it, something breaks, and you're wondering why you ever thought this was a good idea. And then you walk into a classroom. You see a teacher sitting on the floor surrounded by children. You hear them laughing. You watch a child proudly show their teacher a leaf they found outside. And suddenly you remember: Oh. That's why.

That's why Eventus exists.

Behind every enrollment number is a child. Behind every staffing decision is a teacher. Behind every school is a community. And behind all of the spreadsheets and operational work is an opportunity to give a child a really good day.

This month, we also want to say thank you to the teachers and school leaders across Eventus. We know how much you do—and how much of it happens behind the scenes. You create safe places for children to learn. You help them make friends, manage emotions, communicate, explore, and become more confident. And sometimes, you explain for the 47th time that we cannot bring whatever interesting object was discovered on the playground into the classroom. That's important work.

So this October, let's have some fun. Go outside. Collect leaves. Investigate pumpkins. Sing. Dance. Wear costumes. Make a mess. And if you're a school leader, step away from the email for a few minutes and sit on the floor with the children. You might laugh. You might learn something. And you might remember why you chose this industry in the first place.

At Eventus, our mission is to improve early childhood education opportunities for children across the United States. That mission is accomplished one classroom, one teacher, and one child at a time. So let's make October count. Let's create some memories. Let's enjoy the season. And yes, let's have some pumpkin spice while we're at it.

Happy Fall, everyone!
